Three days celebrating Halloween and diversity in Theatron, Colombia's biggest LGBTIQ+ disco in Bogotá. A colorful weekend of inclusion and mutual respect.
Homophobia and hate crimes are still a problem for Colombia's LGBTIQ+ people, many of whom seek refuge in the country's larger cities, like Bogotá, Cali, and Medellín, in order to live more freely. In the last years, more than one hundred LGBTIQ+ persons have been murdered in the country. In August 2012, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) condemned the murders of LGBTIQ+ population in Colombia. In addition, the Commission stated that very frequently, problems exist in the investigation of those crimes, which involve, in part, failures to open investigations into whether the crime was committed by reason of the victim's gender identity or sexual orientation.
Nowadays, the Commission continues receiving information on killings, tortures, arbitrary arrests, and other forms of violence and exclusion against lesbians, gays, trans, bisexual, and intersex persons. The ineffectiveness of the state response fosters high rates of impunity, which in turn lead to the chronic repetition of such crimes, leaving the victims and their families defenseless. And while gay marriage and adoption by gay people are technically permitted in Colombia, homosexual couples keep facing opposition from conservative and religious groups.
