Drag Star
In November 2019, a group of drag queens met in Theatron, Colombia's biggest LGBTIQ+ disco in Bogotá, to participate in Miss Universo DragStar. The main goal of the contest is to make drag queen art visible and exalt the ability to create, develop and interpret a character, does not require any beauty parameter.
A new generation of latin young people is redefining the meaning of being a drag queen. Gender boundaries are thinner and everything is even more playful, irreverent and fun.
Homophobia and hate crimes are still a problem for Colombia's LGBTIQ+ people, many of whom seek refuge in the country's bigger cities, like Bogotá, Cali, and Medellín, in order to live more freely. And while gay marriage is technically permitted in Colombia, homosexual couples have faced opposition from conservative and evangelical groups. Events like Miss Universo Drag Star are intended to build respect for Colombia's LGBTIQ+ community.
