Body Memories

Body Memories is a visual exploration of body, gender issues, memories and physical/mental space. Through double exposures, the dancing body of Chinese choreographer Wen Hui merges with the seascape of the French Riviera and the architectural elements of her apartment at The Camargo Foundation in Cassis. A photographic investigation of body done through the creative collaboration between a photographer and a choreographer which challenge each other in the effort to go beyond boundaries, fears, stigma and categories.

According to the American musician and dancer Gabrielle Roth, "between the head and feet of any given person is a billion miles of unexplored wilderness. We dance to reclaim our brilliant ability to disappear in something bigger, something safe, a space without a critic or a judge or an analyst. We dance to fall in love with the spirit in all things, to seek refuge in our originality and our power to reinvent ourselves; to shed the past, forget the future and fall into the moment feet first".

A tribute to our body and its special, unique way to experience and remember life. We are all unique and it’s in our body —our skin, muscles, nerves— which we actively participate through our day to day experiences; good ones and bad; exciting and trivial. A hymn to our body as extreme example of 'otherness' where the negative and positive poles merge and combine: Yin and Yang, passive and active, female and male, Moon and Sun.

The series was realized in March 2015, while Wen Hui and I were Fellows at The Camargo Foundation in Cassis, France.
